Where to adopt animals?
Pet adoption can occur in a number of different ways, and taking the time to understand how the process works for each one can help you along the way.

1. Animal shelters and humane societies
There are too many dogs and cats around the world waiting for a home, and many end up in local shelters or humanitarian organizations. While many pets can stay in these places for the rest of their lives, some shelters are so overcrowded that they only provide temporary shelter for a limited number of days. That's why an animal shelter or humane society is a good place to look for your pet. If there is one in your area, plan to visit. You can meet adopted animals, learn about volunteer opportunities and special adoption events. Your current resident may be just what you're looking for.
2. Species Rescue Section
If you're in the market for a specific breed, you may want to start your search with a breed enthusiastgroup or breed specific rescue association. However, before going down this route, research whether the temperament and care requirements of the breed you are interested in match your specific needs and lifestyle.
3. Work with your veterinarian
A veterinarian can provide you with a great deal of knowledge about adoption opportunities, especially if you need to help set up homes for patients whose parents can no longer care for them. A veterinary technician or volunteer at a veterinarian's office, who may also volunteer at a shelter or help you as a parent of a foster pet, can also point you in the right direction. If your vet's office has a bulletin board, you can start there, or ask at the front desk.
4. Website for pet adoption
Pet adoption sites are becoming increasingly popular and they can be a great way to start your adoption search from the comfort of your own home. Most of these sites can help you find rescue options at your local animal shelter or rescue organization, as well as among animals that live with foster pet parents. If you're looking for a pet with certain attributes, these sites can help because you can search by breed, age and gender, among other factors.
5. Friends and Family
Perhaps one of the easiest ways to start your adoption search is to tell your friends and family that you want to adopt a pet. Many different factors lead people to give up their beloved pets, and most people are very grateful when a loving new home arrives soon. Plus, if you end up adopting a pet through someone you know, you have the added benefit of being able to contact them at any time, as well as being able to keep some of the items the pet has already used.
6. Local Adoption Events
This website makes it easy to find your new furry family member by allowing you to meet adoptable pets at your local store. Cats are available for adoption in certain stores and dog adoption events occur routinely with rescue partners.
